Maiden Stone

The Maiden Stone (English: Virgin Stone ) is an early medieval artifact, which is located on the roadside near the north-west of Aberdeen ( Eastern Scotland ) Inverurie town.

There is an approximately 3.2 meter high stone slab of pink granite carved with Pictish and Christian symbols, which is dated to the 8th or 9th century. The stone has considerable damage. The east side shows several Pictish symbol stones on other common representations: a comb, a mirror, a so-called Pictish Beast and a stylized centaur and other mythological creatures. On the west side there are early Christian motifs, including a cross, and the figure of a man between two Meeresuntieren - possibly the biblical Jonah and two whales. At the bottom of a spiral ornament is seen. The two narrow sides are also decorated with ornaments.
