Major Cities of Europe IT Users Group

The Major Cities of Europe IT User's Group (MCE ) is a Europe- wide network of local experts on information technology ( IT). The MCE was established in 1982 in London and networked representatives from all parts of Europe and non- European countries such as Tel Aviv, Boston or Tbilisi. The MCE IT Users Group is headquartered in Bremerhaven, Germany.

Model

The MCE is a platform for CIOs and managers from the IT sector administrations to exchange ideas, strategies, experiences and solutions. The goal is to promote innovation and improve the efficiency of the local administrations with the help of modern information and communication technologies. Recent innovations in European cities are especially in the areas of Web 2.0, open data, social networks, apps, and location -based services. At the same time MCE acts as the representative body of members at European level.

Members

The members of the MCE come from 18 countries and 35 cities from Scandinavia, western, eastern and southern parts of Europe and non- European countries and other organizations and universities.

Global and national companies support the initiatives of the MCE by presenting experiences of innovative ICT projects of cities, for example, at the annual conferences.

Cooperation with organizations and universities

The MCE IT Users Group cooperates with organizations and universities to jointly develop solutions to key issues in the field of e-government and IT strategies in the public sector and provide evaluations of research. Partner universities are the University Bocconi (Milan, Italy), the Center for Technology in Government at the University of Albany (Albany, USA), and organizations such Vitako (Berlin, Germany ) and "The Public Technology Institute ".

Main activities

Annual Conference

The annual conference will be hosted by one of the member cities since 1982, the current work focuses on new IT technologies, standards and trends in the international context. The conference offers members and all interested persons a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences and the opportunity to bring joint initiatives on the way. In 2010, the Conference of the city of Berlin was directed in 2011 by the city of Prato. The programs, handouts and videos of the conferences are published.

Conference in Vienna in 2012

At the 2012 conference in Vienna around 300 participants and 30 speakers from all over Europe, the USA and Korea participated. The main topics of the conference were

The theme of the conference in Ljubljana in 2013 was "ICT - Fostering cities ' prosperity ', around 180 people attended the conference .. The main topics of the conference were

Conference in Zurich in 2014

The theme of the conference in Zurich 2014 "Cities managing complexity in the digital world - prepared for the upcoming challenges ." The main topics of the conference are:

  • ICT and the pressure of public finances

Workshops

In one-day, interactive workshops discussing CIOs and IT managers their experiences on current ICT issues such as Open Government, IT security for cities, IT and politics, Open Data, social networks, cloud computing and Smart City. The results of the workshops will be published on the website of the MCE in a separate section.

Participation in EU programs

An important task is the participation in EU programs, such as FUPOL. A series of Smart Cities and Open Government Data projects were presented at the " European Local Government Conference on ICT" and the " Local Government transformation in Europe".

Knowledge Base

The freely accessible knowledge base contains numerous articles and documents of workshops and external sources, such as from experts, research institutions and ICT solution providers.
