Trikala (Greek Τρίκαλα ( n pl); Aromanian. Trikolj ) is a city in Greece (2001) 51 862 inhabitants in the core city and 78 817 in the community, which was considerably enlarged by incorporations most recently in 2010. The city is located in the fertile plain of Thessaly. The river passes through the city of Pinios North North West to south-southeast to the west outside the city and then turns southwest of the city to the east its direction of flow. The city of Trikala is traversed by the river Litheos, which bisects the city. Due to the sometimes very high temperatures in summer it also has the reputation of a heat boiler. 30 km northwest of Trikala in Kalambaka are the Meteora monasteries.

Trikala is located in the same place as once the Homeric Trikka, surmounted by a Byzantine fortress, which was built on a wooded hill overlooking the ruins of an ancient acropolis. Homer mentions the city as Trikka Origin of Asclepius cult ( Iliad 2.729 ff and 4.200 et seq.) Otherwise Trikka in ancient times was of only minor importance. The elevated to municipality Trikala 1997 uses for Greek standards, despite the relatively large city officially named the Homeric Trikka - Dimos Trikkeon ( Δήμος Τρικκαίων, community of Trikkäer ').

Traffic

Trikala is the road junction in Nordwestthessalien. Two national highways pass through the municipality directly. The National Highway 6 passes Trikala from the northwest of Ioannina, Metsovo and Kalambaka coming east toward Larisa and Volos. It is also the European Route 92 and connects the two highways (Ioannina -Thessaloniki - Alexandroupolis ) and 1 ( Athens - Lamia -Larisa -Thessaloniki ). The four-lane section from Trikala to Kalambaka is replaced by the Highway 3 in the second decade of the 21st century. The also four-lane stretch to Larisa is given if classified as a motorway in the future. The National Road 30 begins in Trikala and leaves town in south-west to the village of Pyli at the southern end of the Kerketio massif. From there, the road goes curvy through the Pindos partly along the Achelous Valley to Arta. It is thus the most important connection of Thessaly to Südepirus, despite her curvy route and their only two-lane extension object.

Trikala is on the railway line Paleofarsalos - Kalambaka. This route is currently sail daily from five Lokalzugpaare and an IC train pair to Athens.

An airport does not have Trikala. The closest international airport is the Nea Anchialos / Volos and Thessaloniki and Ioannina airport. All airports are located at least 100 km from Trikala.

Both the Litheos as well as the city of Trikala, south and west passing Pinios are not navigable.
