Makapansgat pebble

The Stone of Makapansgat (also: pebble of many faces, pebble of Makapansgat, Makapansgat Stone ) is a 260 grams heavier pebbles from Jasperit. The stone has not been edited, but wearing a arisen naturally pattern on the top, which is clearly reminiscent of a human face.

The stone is therefore of scientific interest because it was found at some distance from its possible origin near the remains of Australopithecus africanus. A australopithecines or some other hominid must have picked up the stone, because he apparently saw the human face. Therefore, it is discussed whether the stone of Makapansgat is an early indication of symbolic thought and aesthetic sensibilities of the pre-human. In any case, the stone is considered as a candidate for the oldest known Manuport. It was dated at 2.5 to 2.9 million years ago.

The teacher Wilfred I. Eitzman found him in 1925 in a Dolerithöhle in Makapantal at today Mokopane, Limpopo, South Africa. 1974, almost 50 years later, Raymond Dart first described this discovery.
