Málaga Metro

The Metro Málaga is a rail transport system for the southern Spanish port city of Málaga, which is currently under construction. The subway will connect in the future, relevant parts of the city with the rest of the transport network.

History

In the late 1990s the construction of a rapid transit network in Málaga was scheduled to face up to growing traffic problems in the rapidly growing Andalusian port city in the grip. While an above-ground network was first planned, the benefits of an underground solution were soon recognized; despite the significantly higher cost of construction it was decided in favor of the historic cityscape to the tunnel solution. Finally, in 2005 was the official start of the project. Currently, the lines 1 and 2 are under construction; commissioning is scheduled in 2014. Other lines are configured.

Planning, line management

The line 1 with a length of around 11 kilometers starts at Malaguenta Peninsula and leads under the main road and the Alameda Principal Guadalmedina river in the west of the city. The terminus is the campus of the University teatinos. Line 2 with about 7 kilometers in length also starts to Malaguenta and leads on the Mediterranean coast to the south-west to the station Martín Carpena, where they will have over 3 miles to the RENFE train station with line 1, the same route. An early extension of line 2 by a further 4 kilometers to the busy Malaga airport is planned. The projected line 3 is to run from downtown to the east to the suburb of El Palo. In the long run a complete network of 6 lines arise, one of the lines is designed as a circular line to link all the other lines in the suburbs together.
