Malappuram ( Malayalam: മലപ്പുറം Malappuram [ maləp urʌm ː ] ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Kerala. At the time of the 2001 census Malappuram had 58 490 inhabitants. The city is the administrative center of the district of Malappuram.

Malappuram is located in the hinterland of the Malabar Coast on the banks of the river Kadalundi around 50 kilometers south-east of Kozhikode ( Calicut ). Through the town, the road from Kozhikode to Palakkad. Malappuram is not connected to the railway network, the nearest train stations are in Angadipuram and Tirur.

The area of Malappuram is strongly influenced by Islam. During the British colonial period prevailed in the city several times a Muslim revolt against colonial rule. So Malappuram was one of the centers of the Moplah Rebellion, which was struck down in 1921.
