Malham Cove

Malham Cove is a natural limestone formation near the British city Malham, North Yorkshire.

It includes a huge limestone wall in the shape of an amphitheater and a fissured limestone surface.

Originally crashed a waterfall over the edge. But when melted the ice age glaciers, there was only the little stream that flows from the above Malham Tarn lying, but quite a few miles earlier seeps underground. For a long time we suspected that the source that originates at the base of Malham Coves, is identical with this stream, but this is - as be determined by experiments with colored water left - not the case.

The cliff of the Cove is 80 meters high and 300 meters wide. The last time the water rushed over the cliff was in the early 19th century, after a prolonged period of rain. But in the normal case, it does not do so because of the limestone can seep too much of the water.

The wall is considered as one of the most important and difficult climbing goals. It is climbed here since the 1950s. The currently most difficult routes "Rain Shadow" 9a and "Over Shadow" 9a (both French difficulty scale) come Steve McClure and are among the most difficult routes in the UK.

The general public was the rock formation by the film " Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 " known.
