Mamoru Mohri

Mamoru Mōri (Japanese毛利 卫, Mōri Mamoru, born January 29, 1948 in Yoichi, Hokkaido, Japan; known in the U.S. as Mamoru "Mark " Mohri ) is a former Japanese astronaut and was a participant of two space shuttle missions, NASA.

Mōri was born on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, is married to the originating from the same Akiko Naka island and has three children.

Mōri studied chemistry at the University of Hokkaido in 1970 and earned a bachelor's degree and two years later a master. He then went to Australia and completed until 1976 a doctorate in chemistry at Flinders University in Adelaide. Until 1985, he worked for a decade at the University of Hokkaido again: he conducted research and taught at the core technical faculty, brought it up to associate professor and worked in the fields of surface chemistry, high energy physics and semiconductor development.

Mōri was selected by the then Japanese space agency NASDA as a payload specialist in August 1985. Together with Takao Doi and Chiaki Mukai he prepared himself for the first Spacelab flight under Japanese auspices. The Spacelab -J mission should be devoted to materials research and why he has the nickname "First Materials Processing Test" ( FPMT ).

Mōri 1990 was appointed to the mission on STS -47, the first time in 1992, he flew into space. Through his performances as a teacher in " Space Classroom" during the mission he came to large national notoriety. 2000 took Mōri as a senior payload specialist on the STS- 99 in part.

Currently Mōri is head of the future museum Miraikan in Tokyo.
