Mandibular foramen

The mandibular foramen (from Latin foramen " opening ", " hole" and mandible, of Mandere "chew " ) is a bone opening on the inside of the ascending ramus of the lower jaw ( mandible ), through which the inferior alveolar nerve and the vein and artery inferior alveolar nerve of the mandible in the canal ( mandibular ) occur. The mandibular foramen is present on both sides. It is covered by a small bone tongue ( lingula ).

In the immediate vicinity of the mandibular foramen in a nerve block of the lower jaw is ( for the purpose of extraction of a tooth, for example ), the injected anesthetic.
