Manfred Bleuler

Manfred Bleuler ( born January 4, 1903 in Zurich, † November 4, 1994 in Zollikon ) was a Swiss psychiatrist.

Life

Manfred Bleuler was born the son of the psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler and the activist in the temperance and women's movements Hedwig Bleuler. He studied medicine at the University of Zurich and graduated in 1927 the state exam. In 1929 he received his doctorate. Due to a severe accident, he broke off the training to surgeons and devoted himself to psychiatry. In 1941 he was habilitated at the University of Basel with a dissertation on schizophrenia. The following year he was appointed director of the Psychiatric University Clinic Burgholzli and full professor at the University of Zurich. In 1969 he became Professor Emeritus.

Services

Manfred Bleuler introduced the first published in 1916 psychiatric textbook of his father in 1937. 80th anniversary of Manfred Bleuler saw this book its 15th edition. Bleuler is a representative of clinical psychopathology.

Manfred Bleuler added in the book during the years 1937 to 1943 articles in the spirit of Nazi racial hygiene (please see the article at his father). He expressed such opinions also himself.
