Manfred Schaefer

Manfred Schaefer (also: Manfred Schäfer, born February 12, 1943 in pillau in East Prussia ) is a former Australian football player and coach. In 1974, the edged defender part in the World Cup in Germany.

A native German, after fleeing from East Prussia grew up in Bremen, in 1957 emigrated with his family to Australia. Legendary was his since the mid- 1980s, non-existent main job of a milkman households in the suburbs supplied every morning with fresh milk and put it back enormous distances - what turn his consistently excellent fitness was returned.

His football career began in 1960 at the Australian club Blacktown in the north-west of Sydney, for whom he played until 1963. He then joined until 1975 for the St. George -Budapest to the south of Sydney. There he played alongside another great Australian stars of the era such as Attila Abonyi and Johnny Warren. He has been with the club in 1967, 1971, 1974 and 1975, four times champion of New South Wales, which was the highest achievable goal in the absence of a national championship competition. The last title he won it as a player coach. 1967, 1972 and 1975 he won the State Cup trading as Ampol Cup, as well as 1964 and 1972 Federation Cup of the state.

His first appointment to the Australian national football team received Schaefer 1967. Overall Manfred Schäfer played 73 times, including 49 internationals, in the dress of the Australian national team and scored a goal here. His last three international games Shepherd graduated at the Football World Cup 1974 in Germany, where he met the team from Chile, the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany. The completion of the international career followed a year later, the end at national level.

Since then, Schaefer worked as a football coach in Australia. From 1975 to 1977 he coached St. George -Budapest, between 1982 and 1986 he was with Sydney Olympic Australian twice runner-up. In 1989, he coached Brunswick United in the League State of Victoria, 1989-1991 and 1995 APIA Leichhardt Tigers and 1992-1994 Sydney United. In the season 1995 to 1997 he was with Marconi Fairfield and the club led it in 1996 in the Grand Final of the Australian championship, but it lost to the Melbourne Knights FC 1-2. 1998/99 he coached Adelaide Sharks and from 2002 to 2004 he was an assistant coach at Parramatta Power.

He was inducted into the FFA Hall of Fame in 1999.
