Marbofloxacin is an antibiotic from the group of fluoroquinolones. It is used primarily in the veterinary use.

Pharmacology

Marbofloxacin is a gyrase inhibitor, so it inhibits necessary for DNA metabolism enzyme, which is specific for bacteria. The drug accumulates in the white blood cells.

Marbofloxacin acts kill bacteria ( bactericidal ) against Gram-negative and Gram- positive pathogens. It shows good activity against Enterobacteriaceae, Pasteurella, Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus.

Marbofloxacin is metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites N- Desmethylmarbofloxacin and N- Oxidmarbofloxacinin and excreted via the kidney.

Application

Marbofloxacin can be used either orally or parenterally.

It is mainly used for skin infections ( pyoderma ), respiratory tract and mammary gland (MMA complex). In dogs, it is also found in urinary tract infections use. The combination preparation Aurizon is used for ear infections in dogs.

The treatment duration is at least five days.

Contraindications and side effects

Marbofloxacin should not be used for growing young animals, since it can lead to cartilage damage. Even during pregnancy, central nervous seizure disorders or with existing renal insufficiency, the agent should not be used.

Quinolones penetrate the blood -brain barrier and inhibit dose-dependently the receptor binding of the neurotransmitter gamma -aminobutyric acid ( GABA). This can lead to cramps, but they are treatable with Valium.

Harm Smoother side effects include vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite (anorexia).

Combination preparations: Aurizon ( with clotrimazole and dexamethasone). Aurizon is also the name of an Australian company ( Aurizon Holdings Limited).
