Marcel Fratzscher

Marcel Fratzscher ( born January 25, 1971 in Bonn ) is a German economist. He runs since 1 February 2013, the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW ) and is Professor of Macroeconomics at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Previously, he was Head of the Department 'International Policy Analysis ' ( International Economic Policy Analysis ) at the European Central Bank ( ECB) in Frankfurt since 2008.

Life

Fratzscher studied at the Christian -Albrechts -University of Kiel economy and put here in 1992 a bachelor's degree from. He then continued in his studies at Oxford University, where he received in 1994 with his work ethic philosophy and political philosophy, economics intern'l a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE). The Master of Public Policy attained Marcel Fratzscher 1996 at Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge (USA). At the European University Institute in Florence Marcel Fratzscher received his degree in 2002, Ph.D. in the field of economics.

During the Asian financial crisis 1997-1998 Marcel Fratzscher worked as a macroeconomist at the Harvard Institute for International Development in Jakarta, Indonesia. As a consultant Fratzscher supported here, the Indonesian government in matters of economic policy during the financial crisis.

Since April 2001 Fratzscher works for the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. First, as a Senior Economist and Economist in the Directorate of Economics and later as Adviser and Senior Adviser in the Directorate International. Since 2008 he has headed the 24-member International Policy Analysis Division ( International Economic Policy Analysis ) of the European Central Bank. The main task of his department is in the formulation of policy positions of the European Central Bank on international issues in three areas: a) global economic and financial issues (including global financial markets, trade, exchange rates, global financial stability ); b ) country-specific and regional issues in Asia and Latin America; and c) the global financial architecture and its institutions (including themes for the International Monetary Fund, G20, G7 ).

Prior to joining the European Central Bank Fratzscher Marcel worked at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington DC, USA (2000-2001) and at the World Bank in 1996. Previously, he also worked for shorter periods at Mwaniki Associates in Kenya and the Asian Development Bank in the Philippines. In addition, Marcel Fratzscher " International Finance," teaches in the Ph.D. Program of the Goethe University Frankfurt and since the beginning of 2013 at the Humboldt University " DIW S- Professor " for macroeconomics.

Services

When economists Handelsblatt ranking 2011, which measures the research performance of about 1,500 economists on the quality of their publications since 2007, he is out in fourth place. In addition, the Kiel Institute Excellence Award in Global Economic Affairs received in 2007 for his research on global financial market linkages and monetary policy, and the CEPR 2007 Prize for the Best Central Bank Research Paper for his work on financial market bubbles and global imbalances.

Marcel Fratzschers research mostly focuses on applied issues in international macroeconomics, monetary economics and finance. He conducts research in particular to the question of how central banks should communicate with markets and public as well as the global transmission mechanisms of the global financial crisis of 2007-2010.
