Marcel Janco

Marcel Janco ( born as Marcel Iancu ) (Hebrew מרסל ינקו; born May 24, 1895 in Bucharest, † April 21, 1984 in Tel Aviv ) was a Romanian- Israeli artist, writer and architect. He is one of the founding fathers of Dadaism.

Life

He founded in 1916 together with Hugo Ball, Tristan Tzara, Richard Huelsenbeck, Hans Arp and others in Zurich, the Cabaret Voltaire.

In 1917, he created the masks and costumes for the " Sun Festival " of the dancer Rudolf von Laban at Monte Verità in Ascona.

In 1922 he returned to Romania, where he worked as an architect and painter until 1941. Due to the growing anti-Semitism during the Second World War he emigrated to Israel. Janco's initiative owes its existence to the artists' colony was founded in 1953 in En Hod in northern Israel. In 1952 he participated in the Venice Biennale. 1967 Israel Prize he was awarded.

He wrote, among other things, for the avant-garde magazine Contimporanul.
