Mardivirus

The genus Mardi virus (formerly Marek's disease -like viruses ) currently comprises three herpes viruses in gallinaceous birds. Is named the genus after the previously mentioned species of Marek's disease virus, the former two serotypes are classified in the new genus as two different species ( Gallides herpesvirus 2 and 3). The Gallide herpesvirus 2 is the causative agent of Marek 's disease in chickens. All other members of the genus cause disease and are therefore non-pathogenic in animals.

Genome and morphology

Linear, double-stranded DNA genome of the virus is Mardi 180,000 base pairs in size and has a GC content of about 47 %. At its ends, it consists of identical, repetitive sequences, which appear in inverted form within the genome. The enveloped virion is circular, irregular in shape with a diameter of 120 to 200 nm, the 100 to 110 nm icosahedral capsid consisting of 162 capsomers a Triangulationszahl 16 (T = 16). The spindle-shaped coiled DNA is packaged in multiple identical copies in the virion which are fixed at their ends to the inside of the capsid.

System

The GaHV -2 is arranged to due to its proliferation in T lymphocytes originally similar lymphoproliferative herpes viruses such as Epstein -Barr virus ( genus Lymphocryptovirus ). After the discovery of the turkey herpes virus, and on the basis of sequence comparisons the new genus Mardi virus was introduced. All members of the genus show a serological cross-reactivity.
