Margaret Leijonhufvud

Margareta Leijonhufvud Eriksdotter (usually just " Margareta Leijonhufvud ," German Lions Head, born January 1, 1516 Castle in Lo Gräfsnäs in Västergötland, † August 26, 1551 at Castle Tynnelsö Mälaren ) was Queen of Sweden.

Life

She was born as the daughter of Erik Abrahamsson Leijonhufvud and his wife Ebba Eriksdotter from the House of Vasa.

Margareta was only four years old when her father was assassinated on November 8, 1520 at the Stockholm Bloodbath on Stortorget in Stockholm.

The Swedish King Gustav I Vasa married after the death of his first wife, Catherine of Saxe-Lauenburg on 1 October 1536 until 20 -year-old Margareta Leijonhufvud. Although she was 20 years younger than her husband, she felt in her role very well and with their mild, friendly nature she exercised great influence on Gustav Wasa.

However, Margareta was Catholic, and remained loyal to their Catholic faith, while her husband was plunder Catholic churches and monasteries.

In their 15 - year marriage she brought ten children into the world:

Margaret died in August 1551 after a short illness, Gustav Vasa to have been very saddened by her death. She was buried in the cathedral of Uppsala next to Gustavus Vasa 's first wife.

The fact that eight of their ten children she brought within 13 years of each other, reached adulthood, was unusual for its time.
