Margarita Xirgu

Margarita Xirgu i Subirá (Margarita Xirgu de Ortín, Margarida Xirgu; born June 18, 1888 in Molins de Rei, † April 25, 1969 in Montevideo) was a Catalan actress.

Life

Margarita Xirgu debuted in 1906 at the Teatre Romea in Barcelona as Blanca in the play Mar i cel of the Catalan writer Ángel Guimerà. In 1908 she appeared with great success in the play Joventud Príncep on at the Teatre Principal. Her first major film role was in the following year in Fructuós Gelabert Guzmán el Bueno silent film. They still played in other films, but remained essentially a theater actress.

1910, she starred in the premiere of Salome by Oscar Wilde in the Teatro Principal in Barcelona. 1911 Guimerà wrote for them the piece La reina jove. In the same year she founded her own troupe with which she toured South America 1912 undertook. In the next few years Xirgu played successfully in world premieres of works by Benito Pérez Galdós ', Jacinto Benavente and Eduardo Marquinas. In 1927, she appeared in Barcelona in the premiere of Federico García Lorca's play Mariana Pineda in the equipment of his friend Salvador Dalí on. In 1940 she was exiled from the Franco government. It was Uruguayan citizen and took over in 1950 the management of the drama school in Montevideo, which got its name later. Xirgu brought plays of William Shakespeare ( Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth ), Jean Giraudoux ( The Madwoman of Chaillot ), Moliere ( Tartuffe ), and other major writers on the stage.

In 1958 she took La casa de Bernarda Alba at the Argentine television.

In 1910 she married her childhood sweetheart Josep Arnall. You marriage lasted 26 years until the death Arnalls 1936 in Havana. Xirgu died on April 25, 1969 during an operation in Montevideo. In 1988, her remains were transferred back to their homes. Your last resting place the artist in her home town of Molins de Rei.
