Margherita Hack

Margherita Hack ( born June 12, 1922 in Florence, † June 29, 2013 in Trieste ) was an Italian astrophysicist and science writer.

Life

After studying in Florence was Margherita Hack 1964-1997 Associate Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Trieste, where she retired in 1998.

Private Hack strongly committed to social and political issues and ran several times for the Italian Communist Party.

In 2012 she received on the initiative of the Italian President of the Grand Cross of Merit of the Italian Republic, after she had been awarded in 1998 the Gold Medal of Merit for Science and Culture ( Medaglia d' oro ai benemeriti della cultura e scienza ). The Accademia dei Lincei they belonged since 1978 as a corresponding member, socio nazionale it was 1987.

In her honor, the asteroid ( 8558 ) Hack was named.

Hack died in June 2013 at the age of 91 years in a hospital of Trieste.
