Danube

The more than 500 meters long Maria Valeria Bridge ( slowak. Most Márie Valérie; Hungarian Mária Valéria híd ) over the Danube links the Hungarian town of Esztergom with the Slovak city of Štúrovo / Párkány. It is named after Princess Marie Valerie of Austria - Hungary.

It was planned by the railway engineer János Feketeházy who also designed other bridges across the Danube. Since its opening in 1895, the bridge has been destroyed twice. The first time in 1920 and for the second time on 26 December 1944, when it was blown up as well as other bridges during the retreat of German troops. Due to the poor bilateral relations between Hungary and Czechoslovakia and Slovakia, it took almost 60 years, could be started up with the reconstruction of the Maria Valeria bridge. It was only on 11 October 2001, the bridge was opened to the public again.

The EU provided within the framework of the PHARE program a loan than half of the construction costs ( € 10 million ) are available. The restoration of the bridge caused a large increase in business and industry in the Ister- Gran area.
