Marielyst

Marielyst is a tourist resort on the Danish island of Falster and belongs to the municipality Guldborgsund commune in the Region Sjælland. From 1970 to the municipal reform on 1 January 2007, the town belonged to the commune in Sydfalster Storstrøms office.

During the summer, hold up to 50,000 people on in Marielyst, the permanent population of only 693 people (as of 1 January 2013). The place is characterized by its long sandy beach with dunes in the immediate hinterland and typical wooden houses in spacious parkland.

Location

Marielyst is located about 10 km southeast of the city Nykøbing and about 15 km north of the ferry terminal Gedser on the Baltic coast, the E 55 is located about 3 km west. The local situation is elongated on the east coast of Falster.

History

Marielyst was founded on July 28, 1906 by lawyer Frederik Graae and should be a seaside resort in the tradition of Skagen are also attracting artists. The first summer guests were housed in the hotel Marielyst, one of the four established farms, which was transformed into a holiday hotel. Today the building houses the Pensionisthøjskole right behind the marketplace. The first three summer villas in nearby dike were called Troldtøj, Kitzwalde and Tannhäuser, named after works of the poet Holger Drachmann. These houses are now all been preserved. In July 1914 Franz Kafka spent some holidays with his friend Ernst White in Marielyst.

Traffic

Marielyst can also be reached by public transport; there is a bus to the ferry port and Gedser Nykøbing / Falster and there connection to the rail link Hamburg- Copenhagen ( Vogelfluglinie ).
