Marinus van Reymerswaele

Marinus van Reymerswaele (* 1497 in Reimerswaal, † 1567 in Goes ) was a Flemish painter in the Renaissance.

Life

Marinus was the son of a member of the painters' guild of Antwerp, where he was obviously influenced by Quentin Massys. However, he kept during his career mostly on elsewhere. After leaving Reimerswaal, he went to Middelburg. He was there in 1567 punished for his part in the sack of the Westminster Church and later banished. Marinus is known for his paintings of Saint Jerome and his depictions of bankers, moneylenders and tax collectors in an exaggerated fashion clothing, which he painted with care in every detail. These incarnations of greed were very popular and won him renown as far away as Italy and Spain.
