Mario Rigoni Stern

Mario Rigoni Stern ( born November 1, 1921 in Asiago, Asiago † 16 June 2008 ) was an Italian author, veteran of World War II and survivor of a Nazi concentration camp. He belonged to the minority language of the Cimbri.

His first and most famous novel Il sergente nella neve ( Alpini in the Russian snow) from 1953 processed their own experiences that had to do during the Second World War Rigoni Stern as a sergeant in the Alpini Corps during the loss-making retreat from Russia. Other well-known works are Le stagioni di Giacomo ( in German: Giacomo's Seasons), Storia di Tönle and the anthology of short stories sotto la neve Sentieri ( in German: paths under the snow ).

Mario Rigoni Stern was awarded the Premio Campiello and the Premio di Storia BAGUTTA for Tönle, as well as the Premio Bancarellino for Il sergente nella neve. In 1997 he was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize -.
