The Marion Dufresne II is a French research and supply ship. It is named after the French explorer Marc -Joseph Marion du Fresne (1727-1774) and is used for supplying the French Southern and Antarctic Territories (TAAF ) and the Exploration of the Sea. It replaced a 1995 eponymous ship with the same function.

The ship is operated by CMA CGM and chartered annually by the TAAF. At 120 days, it must supply the stations are on the islands of Kerguelen, Crozet, Amsterdam and the Îles Éparses available in the rest of the time it is used by the French Polar Institute Paul Emile Victor as a research vessel. The Marion Dufresne is stationed on the island of La Réunion.

The vessel is adapted to the harsh weather conditions of the southern seas ( Roaring Forties ) and has excellent stability in heavy seas. By Two Trolls as a provider, it is unusually large for a research vessel and can therefore take a large number of scientists on board and remain at sea for a long time.

Technical data and equipment

The propulsion of the ship is diesel electric. The generation of the drive motors by means of two eight-cylinder four -stroke diesel engines, each with 3000 kW. The electric drive motors operate at two fixed-pitch propellers. The main engines driving two generators with an output of 2880 kW (3600 kVA apparent power) and a generator with an output of 2400 kW (3000 kVA apparent power ) on. Furthermore, a backup generator is connected to a power of 300 kW ( 375 kVA apparent power ) are available.
