Mariusz Handzlik

Mariusz Handzlik ( born June 11, 1965 in Bielsko- Biala; † 10 April 2010 Smolensk, Russia) was a Polish diplomat, politician and Under Secretary of State in the President of the Republic ( Kancelaria Prezydenta RP) of Lech Kaczyński.

Life

Handzlik finished his studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Catholic University of Lublin ( Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Katolicki Paweł II) in the field of sociology with a focus on international relations. This was followed by additional studies at the Universities of Vienna, Geneva, Cranfield (England) and Georgia ( USA). He did several internships, namely the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Committee on International Relations of the U.S. Senate, the Research Institute for Social Development of the United Nations (United Nations Research Institute for Social Development, in short UNRISD ) and the Permanent representation of Poland in NATO Headquarters in Brussels.

Since 1992 Handzlik worked as a foreign policy advisor to the Prime Minister of Poland. From 1994 to 2000 he was first secretary and military policy advisor in the Washington embassy. Since 2000, he led the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Export policy and since 2001, he was Deputy Director of the Security Policy Department of. From 2002 to 2003 Handzlik was ambassador in Paris and Chairman of the Missile Technology Control Regime ( Missile Technology Control Regime, MTCR short ). From 2004 to 2005 he was Minister adviser to the Permanent Representation of Poland to the United Nations ( UN) in New York.

Since 2006, headed Handzlik in the presidential office, the foreign policy office. On 9 October 2008, he was appointed to the post of Under-Secretary in charge of international affairs. On 26 March 2009, the Institute of National Remembrance informed ( Instytut Pamięci Narodowej, short IPN) that he ( briefly SB) was conducted in 1987 under the pseudonym " Piotr " as a secret employee of the former secret security service sluzba Bezpieczeństwa. Handzlik denied the employees with the SB and only confirmed the signing of a document in which he undertook to meet with SB officers. On 10 September 2009 it finally was the Warsaw District Court ( Sąd Okręgowy w Warszawie ) only as victims and not as employees of this secret Polish equivalent of the security service of the GDR.

2000 Handzlik was awarded by the U.S. Department of Defense with a medal for his services. On April 10, 2010 Mariusz Handzlik belonged to a Polish delegation headed by President Lech Kaczyński, who was to travel on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the Katyn massacre to the memorial to Russia. However, in a plane crash of the delegation near the military airfield Smolensk - North he came together with other high-ranking representatives of Poland died.

Handzlik had three children. Posthumously, he was on 16 April 2010 the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta ( Krzyż Komandorski Orderu Odrodzenia Polski ) awarded.
