Mariya Petkova

Marija Petkowa ( Bulgarian Мария Петкова, English transcription Mariya Petkova, born Вергова - Wergowa - Vergova, . Born November 3, 1950 in Plovdiv ) is a retired Bulgarian discus thrower.

She won the silver medal in the discus throw at both the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. Both times she was beaten only by the East Germans Evelin Jahl.

The European Athletics Championships 1982 in Athens, she finished second at the World Athletics Championships 1983 in Helsinki third parties. In addition, she was twice winner at Universiade, namely in Rome in 1975 and 1977 in Sofia. She was also six times Bulgarian national champion in the discus throw (1974, 1976, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1984).

With her personal best jump of 71.80 meters, set on 13 July 1980 in Sofia, she surpassed the only two months old world record by Evelin Jahl by 30 centimeters. It was only on 22 May 1983 that the Soviet athlete Galina Sawinkowa to increase it to 73.26 m.

Marija Wergowa - Petkowa is 1,85 m tall and weighed about 105 kg competition times.
