Markus Breitschmid

Markus Breitschmid ( born April 20, 1966 in Lucerne ) is a Swiss architectural theorist and historian of architecture.

Life

Breitschmid is a trained architect. He studied architecture in Switzerland, the United States of America and in Germany. He received his doctorate at the Technical University of Berlin as a doctor of engineering sciences. His publications deal with the aesthetic mentality of modern and contemporary architecture. With the book " The Spirit -build. Friedrich Nietzsche and the architecture " Breitschmid is one of the first, the importance of the term " treated building " in the works of Friedrich Nietzsche. Other book publications deal with the themes of contemporary Swiss architecture, the problem of tectonics, Bruno Taut, and the work of Valerio Olgiati. Breitschmid is the most important experts and researchers on the work of Olgiati.

Since 2004 Breitschmid professor at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia, first as an associate professor and since 2010 as a full professor. Since 2011 he is Head of the Bachelor of Architecture training course. Previously, he taught at Cornell University ( 2003), the University of North Carolina ( 1998-2002), the Catholic University of America (1997) and the University of Louisiana ( 1994-95 ). Breitschmid has given numerous lectures on a wide variety of architecture colleges, architecture associations and organizations in the U.S., Europe and Asia, and he was active in numerous faculties of architecture as a guest critic.
