Marquess of Salisbury

Marquess of Salisbury is a British peerage in the Peerage of Great Britain, which for James Cecil, 7th Earl of Salisbury ( 1748-1823 ) was created in 1789. Most champions played a prominent role, especially Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne - Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, three times Prime Minister at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in British politics of the following two centuries.

Ceremonies

The title of Earl of Salisbury has a complicated past. He was first awarded in the mid-12th century to Patrick de Salisbury, and later by Alice Plantagenet, 5th Countess of Salisbury, wife of Thomas Plantagenet, 2nd Earl of Lancaster, inherited. When he lost his title and was executed in 1322 for treason, forfeited the title of Countess.

The title was created in 1337 for a second time, now for Richard Montacute. Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury ( 1400-1460 ) inherited the title later. After his death he rested, as several people claimed the title for himself.

1472 was the title of George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence, given. In 1478 even this was executed for high treason. He was succeeded by Edward of Middleham, who later became Prince of Wales. With Edward's death the title became extinct again.

1485 the controversy over Richard Neville's legacy has ended. The title of Earl of Salisbury went to Edward Plantagenet, Richard's grandson, who was also executed in 1499 for treason. The title was officially abandoned in 1504 again, but picked up in 1513 for Edwards sister Margaret Pole, which from 1539 also again and now finally, lost it.

1605 Robert Cecil, was a close advisor of King James I and son of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley, one of the eminent statesman in the era of Queen Elizabeth I, was appointed Earl of Salisbury.

Subordinate title

The Marquess of Salisbury also carries the title of Earl of Salisbury ( created in 1605 ), Viscount Cranborne ( created 1604) and Baron Cecil, of Essendon in the County of Rutland, ( created 1603). The title of Viscount Cranborne is the courtesy title of the eldest son and heir of the Marquess.
