Mars Williams

Mars Williams ( * May 29, 1955 in Elmhurst (Illinois ) ) is a saxophonist from Chicago whose music spectrum of rock music on Acid Jazz to Free Jazz is sufficient.

Biography

His father was a jazz trumpeter who encouraged him to play an instrument. At the age of 10 he learned clarinet, then moved to the old and later on the tenor saxophone. He attended Karl Berger's Creative Music Workshop before studying at Don Cherry, Anthony Braxton and Muhal Richard Abrams. Williams was in the 1980s saxophonist in Hal Russell NRG Ensemble, which he took over after Russell's death. In the early 1980s he also worked in New York City and played with John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Elliott Sharp, Fred Frith and Daevid Allen. He toured with the Psychedelic Furs, worked for Billy Idol and is co-founder of the funk and acid jazz band Liquid Soul. With Ken Vandermark he played in the NRG Ensemble, but also in Vander Marks Quintet and Peter Brötzmann Chicago cinghiale and Tentett. He continues to lead the band projects Witches & Devils, Slam and XmarsX.

In Germany he became famous for his appearances at the Moers Festival ( 1997, 1999 ( Liquid Soul ) and 2004 ( Liquid Soul and XmarsX ( with a broken arm) ) and the Offside 2008 with Mars Williams Quartet.
