Martial Singher

Martial Singher ( born August 14, 1904 in Oloron -Sainte -Marie; † 9 March 1990 in Santa Barbara, California ) was a French opera singer (baritone ) and music educator.

Singher first began studying as a teacher at the University of Toulouse and operational singing as a hobby. Encouraged by the French Education Minister Édouard Herriot he began in 1927 to study at the Conservatoire de Paris where Maurice Fauré, André and Pierre Grasse Chéreau were his teachers. After graduating in 1930 he made his debut in Amsterdam as Oreste in Christoph Willibald Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride and in the same year at the Paris Opera as Athanaël in Jules Massenet's Thaïs.

In 1931 he took on the side of Lauritz Melchior singer Vanni Marcoux as Iago in Verdi's Otello. In addition to the commitment to the Paris Opera Singher also appeared in Buenos Aires and London in the 1930s. In 1941, he travel to the U.S., where he made his debut in 1943 at the Metropolitan Opera. Here he was engaged until 1959 he had to retire for health reasons from the stage.
