Martín Cárdenas (botanist)

Martín Cárdenas Hermosa ( born November 12, 1899 in Cochabamba, † 14 February 1973 in Cochabamba ) was a Bolivian botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Cárdenas ".

Life

Following basic training, he studied and graduated in 1918 with a Bachelor of Science and Letters from. He then continued his studies in chemistry and science at a university in La Paz with a scholarship. During this time he came into contact with the Swedish botanist Eric Asplund and accompanied him on his travels through Bolivia.

In addition to the cacti plants he was interested in other plant families of those species occur in Bolivia, as among other things the Amaryllidaceae family, the sword lily family, the bromeliads, the palm family and also the Bignoniaceae.

He wrote many technical articles for renowned botanical journals. She appeared in cacti and other succulents, Cactus & Succulent Journal of America, National Cactus and Succulent Journal (England), Succulenta, Cactus, Description Cactáceas Succulentas y Mexicanas and in many other South American publications. He authored the 1969 Manual de plantas económicas de Bolivia.

Honors

After Martín Cárdenas plant genera are named: Henry Hurd Rusby of 1927, the genus Cardenasia, by Robert Crichton Foster 1945, the genus Cardenanthus, Curt Backeberg 1949, the cactus genus Neocardenasia and Fred Alexander Barkley 1954, the genus Cardenasiodendron. Numerous plant species epithet in reference to him, including the three species of cactus Echinopsis cardenasiana, Gymnocalycium cardenasianum and Sulcorebutia cardenasiana.

On 10 July 1998 he was honored with a postage stamp issued in Bolivia ( MiNr. 1370 ).
