Martin Kukučín

Life

Kukučín was born into a noble family and went to high school in Revúca, Martin and Neusohl (1871-1875), then a Präparandie in Kláštor pod Znievom ( 1875-1878 ). He finished his secondary school studies in 1885 in Sopron and wanted to study theology in Bratislava, but then chose the Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in Prague and remained there until 1893.

Because of insufficient labor supply in Slovakia, he moved to Selca on the island of Brac in Dalmatia, where he became the local doctor in 1894. Due to societal disputes left Kukučín with his wife Perica Didolić 1907, the island and emigrated to Chile in South America. After spending a year in Santiago de Chile, he moved on to Punta Arenas in Patagonia and lived in a community of Croatian emigrants. Only after the creation of Czechoslovakia Kukučín returned to Europe and after a short stay in Paris, he came in the fall of 1922 in Czechoslovakia. In the years 1923-1925 he moved his residence between Martin and Croatian thermal baths. The end of 1925, he traveled again to Chile to settle there, property matters, and returned in the spring of 1926. Because of his mental illness, he settled in the Croatian Thermal Lipik.

He died on 21 May 1928 Hospital of Pakrac of pneumonia. He was initially buried in the cemetery Mirogoj in Zagreb, before his remains were brought to the National Cemetery Martin in October 1928.

Works

Martin Kukučín be assigned as the author of the realism. He wrote in his works mainly via the simple life in the country, but also about the student life and Prague. Through his emigration he also wrote about Dalmatia, living in South America and later on historical topics.
