Martin Schalling the Younger

Martin Schalling the Younger ( * April 21, 1532 in Strasbourg, † December 29, 1608 in Nuremberg ) was a Protestant theologian, hymn writer and reformer.

His father was Martin Schalling the Elder.

Life

Schalling studied in Wittenberg, in 1554 Master, came as a deacon in Regensburg, but came into conflict with Nicolaus Gallus and therefore moved on to Amberg. When Elector Friedrich III. introduce of the Palatinate by Caspar Olevian the Reformed conception sought to Schalling resisted and sought advice in Wittenberg.

He had to leave Amberg and went to Vilseck. It was only under the reign of Louis VI. could he return to Amberg as court preacher and superintendent. The Konkordienbemühungen he first worked with, also strove for his teacher Philipp Melanchthon, but withdrew last but back. In 1585 he became pastor in Nuremberg and could work another 20 years there.

As a songwriter, he made a name for himself through his song Welcome dear, I love you, O Lord (EC 397 ), which, among others, Heinrich Schütz ( in the clergy choir music), Dietrich Buxtehude ( cantata BuxWV 41) and Johann Sebastian Bach ( on Finally, the St. John Passion ) was set to music. The text was drafted in forest Assen on July 2, 1569 ( " the day of visitation of Mary ") as the closing prayer a sermon ( a facsimile of the manuscript in Eckert 1969, Plate II -IV, according to S. 216).
