Martin Schmidt

Martin Schmidt ( born July 4, 1969 in Berlin ) is a German judoka.

Biography

Martin Schmidt has two sisters and two Brüder.Während school he had tried in various offered in school sports. 1977 enrolled him at his sister with the ASG Wilhelmshagen in Judo. There, his talent was such that he joined the training center rotation in Berlin-Mitte in 1979. In 1984 he was delegated to the Children and Youth Sports School and brought up by the coach Jochen Bech at the power peak. In the junior level under the guidance of his coach Detlef Ultsch Schmidt was first successes. 1988 he managed the first victory in the senior GDR championships to 60 kg. After two fifth places at the Junior European Championships he won the 1989 European Junior Championship title to 65 kg.

The international breakthrough at senior level he succeeded in 1991 by winning the bronze medal at the European Championships in Prague up to 65 kg. In 1992 he won the German Cup to 71 kg and the A- tournament in Budapest. Nevertheless, the participation in the Olympic Games it was still denied. In the same year he won with the crew of the SC Berlin the European Cup in Paris. Under the coaching team Jochen Bech / Detlef Ultsch and the national coach Dietmar Hötger he matured into a Spitzenjudoka. In November 1994 as the first non-Asian to 71 kg judoka he succeeded in winning the Kano Cup in Japan. In 1995 he won the European Championships in Birmingham and was since then as one of the world's best Uchi - mata launchers and ground fighters. In the spring of 1996, he retired to a medial ligament tear in the knee. Despite this handicap, he reached No. 7 in the Olympic Games in Atlanta.

After the surgery, it took almost two years before he received his connection with the world leaders again. With the repeated winning the World Masters in Munich in 1999, another tournament successes and the nomination for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, he confirmed his leading position to 71 kg. He won a total of seven World Cup tournaments, making it a leader in the German Judo.

As " Mister Bundesliga " ( for years without defeat in the first BL ), he won with the JC 90 Frankfurt ( Oder), twice the German team champion title and fights since 2003 undefeated for the JC Eberswalde in the 2nd Bundesliga.

Professionally, Martin Schmidt is active in sports. He leads the sports branch of Dresdner Bank AG in the Eastern Region, supervised sports groups, organized events and areas of workplace health promotion.
