Martin Sheridan

Martin John Sheridan ( born March 28, 1881 in Bohola, County Mayo, Ireland, † March 27, 1918 in New York City ) was an American track and field athlete.

Sheridan came in 1897 as a 16- year-old from his native Ireland to the United States, where he joined the police of New York. He won the gold medal in the discus at the Olympic Summer Games 1904 in St. Louis. He could repeat the success four years later at the Games in London. In London he also went on to win gold in the " Discus Throw in a classic style ", and bronze in the long jump from a standing

However, even more successful he was with the so-called interludes in 1906 in Athens. There he won the competition in the shot put and discus and was second in the high jump from a standing long jump from the state and in the weight throw. He died at the age of only 36 years of pneumonia. In 1988 he was admitted posthumously inducted into the "Hall of Fame" of the U.S. Association of Athletics Federations.
