Mary Ingalls

Mary Amelia Ingalls ( born January 10, 1865 in Wisconsin, USA, † October 20, 1928 in De Smet, South Dakota) was a sister of author Laura Ingalls.

She was born as the first daughter of Charles and Caroline Ingalls, and served as a real role model for the role of Mary in the television series Little House. This was based on the childhood memories of Laura Ingalls '. In contrast to the series character Mary Ingalls never married.

At the age of 14 years, Mary Ingalls became blind after a serious illness ( presumably by scarlet fever ). The family moved around to allow Mary Ingalls visiting the Iowa College for the Blind in Vinton. In 1889, she graduated from college and lived with her parents until their death. Mary Ingalls died in 1928 at the age of 63 years and was buried in the De Smet Cemetery.
