MASS (decoy system)

MASS (Multi Ammunition Softkill System) is a system developed and manufactured by Rheinmetall decoy system for the protection of naval ships against anti-ship missiles.

Each caster has for the use of programmable omnispektralen decoys about 32 tubes, which can be reloaded manually. Through the use of multi-spectral decoys, it is possible all relevant spectral regions (radar, IR, UV, EO, laser and visible light) to cover with a single system. While radar and infrared guided weapon systems by aluminized glass fiber strips ( chaff ), respectively, by burning off heat flares red phosphorus (flares ) a false target to be offered, laser and electro-optically guided missiles to be dissuaded by an impenetrable for them artificial fog wall from the target.

Through the control of five parameters ( azimuth, elevation, distance, amount, sequence), the system can react very flexibly. The response time should be in the event of an approaching Mach 2 Seezielflugkörpers only 2 s. In the standard version the detection of an approaching missile over the sensors of the ship is. In addition, a variant with integrated passive sensors is available for a radar, laser and electro-optical threats.
