Mass No. 1 (Bruckner)

The Mass No. 1 in D minor for soloists, four-part mixed chorus, orchestra and organ is a musical work by Austrian composer Anton Bruckner ( WAB 26). He composed in his life, several masses, three of which are numbered: D minor (No. 1), E minor ( No. 2) and F minor (No. 3).

Formation

Bruckner wrote the first version in 1864 under the impact of a performance of Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser, to be listed which actually birthday of Emperor Franz Joseph I on 18 August would have. Due to time constraints, the premiere took place only on 20 November of the same year in the Old Cathedral in Linz. With this exhibition Bruckner made ​​the breakthrough; the performance was a huge success both with critics and contemporaries and audiences.
