Mass No. 1 (Bruckner)
The Mass No. 1 in D minor for soloists, four-part mixed chorus, orchestra and organ is a musical work by Austrian composer Anton Bruckner ( WAB 26). He composed in his life, several masses, three of which are numbered: D minor (No. 1), E minor ( No. 2) and F minor (No. 3).
Formation
Bruckner wrote the first version in 1864 under the impact of a performance of Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser, to be listed which actually birthday of Emperor Franz Joseph I on 18 August would have. Due to time constraints, the premiere took place only on 20 November of the same year in the Old Cathedral in Linz. With this exhibition Bruckner made the breakthrough; the performance was a huge success both with critics and contemporaries and audiences.
