Massongex

Massongex is a municipality in the district of Saint- Maurice in the French speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland.

History

The area of today's village was settled by excavations since the end of the Younger Pre-Roman Iron Age (La Tène period ). He bore the name Tarnaiae and was probably inhabited by the Gallic tribe of Nantuaten, which is also the scientific name Tarnaiae Nantuatium derived. Tarnaiae was the first place below Martigny, where you could cross the Rhone and was therefore in Roman times an important trading center. The place name probably came forth from God Taranis. Tarnaiae was probably 260 AD by the Alamanni destroyed the foundations of the public baths of the Roman period are now imitated in Massongex.
