The Mataura River is a river in the Southland region of the South Island of New Zealand. It has a length of 149 miles or 240 kilometers.

There are several possible explanations for the name of the flow. Mataura, was ancestor of the Māori Ngatoro -i - rangi, the priest of the Arawa waka, one of the canoes, which reached the New Zealand Māori. Another meaning comes from the language of the Māori and is a composition of the words mata ( 'red' ) and ura ( ' whirled ') to understand. Other interpretations relate to the different species of fish in the water.

Geography

The sources of the river are in the Eyre Mountains south of Lake Wakatipu. From there it flows in a southeasterly direction to Gore. He also runs south through Mataura, forms the western end of the Catlins and reaches the Pacific Ocean at the southern coast of the South Island and flows 20 miles east of Bluff Toetoes Bay in the Foveaux Strait.

Together with the Oreti River and the Aparima River forms the Mataura River Murihiku the Plains and drains an area of approximately 730 km ².
