Mataura

Mataura is a small town in Gore district in the Southland region of the South Island of New Zealand. She had 2001 1.740 inhabitants in the census. It received city status in 1895.

It is located on State Highway 1 and the railway main line of the South Island, the Main South Line 13 km south-west of Gore (New Zealand) and 53 kilometers north of Invercargill. To the south of the State Highway 96 branches off from SH 1 and connects the city on Te Tipua and Waitane with Ohai.

The Mataura River flows southward through Mataura, live in it rainbow trout.

In Mataura is a slaughterhouse. By August 2000, the city was also the site of a large paper and pulp mill, which was then shut down, however, a Wiederinbetriebnhahme is considered unlikely.
