MATE (software)

The MATE desktop environment is a currently developed Fork of not more developed GNOME 2 The name derives from the beverage called Mate from (Spanish yerba mate ).

History

After GNOME 2 GNOME 3 was developed and changed the operating concept strongly. Many users wanted to keep the principle of Gnome 2, Gnome 2 was just not developed any further and further maintained with no security developments and it is Gnome 2 MATE accepted.

Apart from the actual desktop environment and the system applications from GNOME 2 were taken over and renamed.

Linux distributions

Mate is included in some Linux distributions.

In some smaller distros like Linux Point and Descent | OS is the default desktop. Since Sabayon Linux 10, Linux Mint 13 and Fedora 17 MATE is one of the default desktop environments. From Salix OS installed there is a variant of the Mate. In Arch Linux Mate can be installed from official Arch Linux repositories for Debian 7 ( wheezy ) and Ubuntu 12:04 to 13:04 and many other distributions, Mate can be installed from unofficial package sources. Currently MATE has been added to the official repositories of Debian 8 ( jessie / testing ).
