Mate Ujević

Mate Ujević ( born July 13, 1901 in Krivodol near Imotski, Dalmatia, † January 7, 1967 in Zagreb) was a Croatian writer and the founder and editor of the first Croatian Encyclopedia.

Life

Mate Ujević was born in Krivodol near Imotski in Dalmatia. His education took place in the Franciscan monastery in Sinj. In childhood Ujević was influenced by the Franciscans ( OFM) and remained throughout his life an avowed Roman Catholic Christian. As a high school student, he published ( Renaissance ) with his schoolmates, who later became Croatian historian, journalist and essayist Bogdan Radica, the Journal Renesansa.

After graduating from high school in 1922 in Split Ujević studied in Zagreb and Ljubljana, literature, history and art. During this time he published a magazine Luč (Candlelight ) out. In 1926 he was Supplent and later professor at the Archbishop's classical school in Zagreb.

1928 published his novel Mate Ujević Mladost Tome Ivica ( The youth of Thomas Ivić ). In 1929 Ujević took over the management of the literary- cultural section of the weekly newspaper Hrvatska straža (Croatian guard ).

In 1932 published Mate Ujević an overview of the Croatian literature (Hrvatska književnost ), 1933, a study on Croatian Greek Catholic priest and writer Jovan Hranilović. In 1935 Mate Ujević doctorate in the subject area literature.

In the late 1930s Ujević began in agreement with the majority owner of the publishing house Tipografija, D. schoolyard, the work on the " Croatian Encyclopedia " (Hrvatska enciklopedija ). In 1938 Ujević gave Hrvatska narodna pjesmarica (Croatian National Songbook ) out. In 1939, the authorities of the Banovina of Croatia formed a consortium to publication of the " Croatian Encyclopedia " and Ujević was its editor. 1940, a sample sheet of the encyclopedia was presented in 1941 came out the first of five published volumes of the encyclopedia.

In 1943, as director of the Independent State of Croatia in what is known from the consortium to the release of " Croatian Encyclopedia " prevailing Croatian bibliographic Publishing Institute, Mate Ujević working on another four volumes of the encyclopedia as well as bibliographies.

During the period of fascism or the Nazi occupation of Croatia, he saved his friend, Jewish Encyclopaedists shortcoming Berman and two Jewish sisters from being deported to the concentration camp at Jasenovac. He also served as chief editor of the Pomorski leksikon ( Seelexikon ) of the Adriatic Institute of JAZU.

In 1950, the Yugoslav Lexicographical Institute was founded, Ujević took over at the invitation Miroslav Krleza the position as his deputy in the management of the Institute. There was Ujević among other things out the Pomorska enciklopedija ( Maritime Encyclopedia ) and a retrospective bibliography of Yugoslav Periodistik by the year 1945. In 1955 he was editor of the publication of the misli i poglede (thoughts and observations ) of Antun Gustav Matoš by the Yugoslav Lexicographical Institute.

1965 Mate Ujević retired. He died on 7 January 1967 in Zagreb.

Since 1996 the Croatian Lexicographic Institute for outstanding work in the field of lexicography and issued Enzyklopädistik the price " Mate Ujević ".
