Mater Matuta (lat. morning mother) was in Roman mythology, the goddess of spring, birth, and growth. She was a kind-hearted goddess, in whose honor every year on 11 June, which was celebrated Matralia ( Feast of the mothers). The Mater Matuta was identified by the Romans with the Greek Leukothea. As such, she was the mother of Portunus, with whom she protected the maritime and ports.

From her name to the Latin word " Matutina " ( = hour of the morning, see Matins ) derives, from which the German Christian terminology Mette has emerged.
