Mathieu Kessels

Mathieu Kessels ( born May 20, 1784 in Maastricht, The Netherlands, † March 3, 1836 in Rome) was a sculptor.

Boiler learned in Venlo and Paris goldsmith's art and then went to Hamburg. In 1806 he went to St. Petersburg, where he trained under Joseph Camberlain sculptor.

He came back in 1814 to Maastricht, then to Paris, where he attended the school of Anne Louis Girodet - Trioson four months, and finally to Rome, where he bas-reliefs day and night pointed out in Thorvaldsen's studio, and in 1819 with his image of St. Sebastian the exposed Canova price won.

He also created the sculptures:

  • Cupid arrow sharpening
  • Genius of the Arts
  • Bust of Admiral Maarten Tromp in Walhalla
  • Head of Christ
  • Flood scene: man, woman and child in colossal size, which characterizes him as an independent from the Thorvaldsenschen school naturalists.
