Mati Karmin

Mati Karmin ( born February 26, 1959 in Tartu) is one of the most famous contemporary Estonian sculptor.

Life and Art

Mati Karmin was born the son of an agricultural scientist. He completed his studies in 1986 at the State Art Institute of the Estonian SSR ( Eesti NSV Riiklik Kunstiinstituut ) in the Estonian capital Tallinn. From 1986 to 1997 he was a lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Arts ( Eesti Kunstakadeemia ).

From 1992 to 1995 was Carmine President of the Estonian Artists' Union ( Eesti art Nike Liit ), which he had joined in 1988. Since 2000, Carmine taught at the Higher Art School of Tartu (Tartu Kõrgem Kunstikool ), since 2001 with the title of professor.

Karmin debuted in 1981 with his sculpture Militäär - rebane ( " The Military Fox" ) of corroded scrap metal. He has become known primarily for its Momumentalplastiken and sculptures in public space. Carmine has designed numerous monuments in Estonia since the 1980s. Preferred materials are plaster, bronze, stone and wood. For his work he 1993 Kristan - Raud Prize was awarded.

For many years, Mati Karmin employed old mines in the north of Estonia, especially on the islands in front of the Estonian mainland. Carmine designed these remains of World War II to metal art objects around, especially to furniture-like pieces ( miinimööblid ). A former Soviet military vehicle with a large rocket phallus is one of the best known and most bizarre large objects Carmine.
