Matilda of Boulogne

Mathilda of Boulogne (* 1105 in Boulogne -sur -Mer, † May 3, 1152 at Hedingham Castle, Essex ) was Countess of Boulogne and by marriage Queen of England.

She was the daughter of Eustace III. , Count of Boulogne ( Boulogne house ), and his wife, Mary of Scotland, a daughter of King Malcolm III. born. In 1125, she was with Stephen, Count of Mortain and later King of England married. During the time of the Civil War, it was a strong devotee of her husband. After his arrest, she personally traveled to London to win the support of the nobility, led an army of loyal followers, reached the arrest of Robert of Gloucester, reaching her husband's release.

Stephen and Mathilda had five children:

  • Baldwin (* 1126, † 1135 )
  • Eustace IV (* 1130, † 1153 ), Count of Boulogne
  • Mathilda (* 1133, † 1153 )
  • Wilhelm ( * 1134, † 1159 ), Count of Mortain and Boulogne, Earl of Surrey
  • Maria ( † 1173 )

1125 her father died and she succeeded him as Countess of Boulogne, ruled the small county to 1150 together with her husband, after his death alone, and gave them in 1151 to their son Eustace. This bequeathed to his brother William, and since both sons remained childless, the county finally went over to the youngest daughter Maria.

Mathilda died at Hedingham Castle and was buried in Faversham Abbey in the county of Kent.
