Matilda II, Countess of Boulogne

Matilda of Boulogne ( Mathilde of Dammartin, * 1202, † 1262 ) was a French noblewoman, Countess of Boulogne and Dammartin and 1248-1253 Queen of Portugal.

Matilda was the daughter of Rainald I, Count of Countess Ida of Boulogne and Dammartin. Since her parents had no son, she inherited the county of Boulogne. In her first marriage, she married in 1216 Prince Philippe of France, a son of King Philip II Augustus. This marriage ended in 1234 with the death of her husband.

In 1235 she then married Alfonso, a younger brother of the Portuguese King Sancho II This remained at the French court, because his aunt, Blanche of Castile, the widow of King Louis VIII, as regent and king mother possessed great influence over there. Through her marriage she gives her man the county Boulogne.

In Portugal, there were at this time great internal political entanglements. Sancho II had become entangled in a hopeless conflict with the Catholic Church. Blanche of Castile saw the possibility of a closer link between Portugal to France and therefore allied IV against Sancho II with Pope Innocent She managed to persuade the Pope to depose Sancho II and Alfonso to on the Council of Lyons administrator of the to appoint kingdom.
