Matilde E. Moisant
Matilde Moisant (* September 13 1878 in Earl Park, Indiana; † February 5, 1964 in Glendale, California ) was an American pilot and second American with his own pilot's license.
Life
Matilde Moisant was a daughter of French- Canadian farmer Médore Moisant (1839 -? ) And his wife Josephine Fortier ( 1841-1901 ). She grew up along with her eight brothers and sisters in Manteno, Illinois.
Your interest in flying, she discovered at her brothers. John Bevins Moisant Below (1868-1910), a popular aviator and flight instructor, who was famous for his victory in the Betting flight around the Statue of Liberty. Matilde and Harriet Quimby (1875-1912) began flying lessons at the flight school of their brothers John and Alfred, the Moisant School of Aviation in Mineola on Long Iceland to take. The Wright brothers took at this time on any female student pilot. Although John Moisant shortly thereafter in a crash was killed, the two women continue teaching. On August 17, 1911 Moisant was the second woman in the U.S. their ticket.
September 12, 1911, she flew with her Bleriot monoplane at an altitude of 1,200 feet ( 2,500 m) above the Nassau Boulevard in Garden City and won the Rodman Wanamaker Trophy. In 1912 she exhibited at the altitude record of a woman over Mexico City. In the first few months she was with the Belgian pilot Hélène Dutrieu (1877-1961) in the contest; she was the first female pilot who took a passenger and in the Paris Air Guard. After Moisants machine Texas caught fire during charging, due to a leak in the fuel tank, on April 14, 1912 in Wichita Falls; heard them at the request of her family on with aviation. Moisant then lived on the family farm in San Salvador. During the First World War she served as a radio operator for the Red Cross.
Matilde Moisant died on February 5, 1964 at the age of 84 years at the sanatorium of Glendale and her remains were in the portal of the folded wings (German: portal of the folded wings ) in Valhalla Memorial Park, North Hollywood, Los Angeles buried.
