Matthäus Casimir von Collin

Matthew Collin (* March 3, 1779 in Vienna, † November 23, 1824 ibid, Suburban Penzing ) was an Austrian writer and educator. Today, he is mainly known for his set to music by Franz Schubert poems.

Life

Matthew Collin is a doctor's son Heinrich Joseph Collin (1731-1784) and the younger brother of the writer Heinrich Joseph von Collin. It was in 1801, Dr. jur. his doctorate in 1808 and professor of aesthetics and history of philosophy in Kraków; then he worked as Hofkonzipist in the Department of Finance in Vienna. After he had already made their mark at a young age with literary efforts - it was among other things a libretto for a Ossian subject for Peter von Winter - he gave from 1814 out the Allgemeine Literatur -Zeitung and founded in 1818, the Vienna yearbooks for Literature. As its editor, he was an influential player in the literary circles of the Viennese romanticism. His dramas that take up themes from Austrian history, be considered as a precursor Grillparzer's historical tragedies.

Since 1815, the education of his son Napoleon Prince of Parma was ( 1818: Duke of Imperial City ), entrusted. Collins remains was buried only on the old Penzinger parish cemetery and later transferred to the Hietzing Cemetery. His tomb was local but again occupied and is not obtained.
