Matthias Steinl

Matthias Steinl or Steindl (* 1644, † April 18, 1727 ) was an Austrian architect and sculptor. He was one of the first, established the style of the High Baroque in Austria.

Probably from the Salzburg area to arise, it has been demonstrated since 1682 in Wroclaw, probably he was recommended by the local prince-bishop to Vienna. 1688 he was an Imperial Chamber leg Stecher.

His (documented unsecured ) first architectural job at Vienna was the parish church of Laxenburg (acquired by Carlo Antonio Carlone ), with whom he first high baroque building north of the Alps realized with curved façade elements from 1703.

His architectural designs have been mainly realized by Joseph Munggenast with which he, as with his uncle Jacob Prandtauer, often worked. These works include the Tower of Dürnstein (1718 ) and the pin Zwettl (1722).

From his sculptural work, especially his horsemen statues of Leopold I and Joseph I are famous, which show the two emperors as a fighter against the Turks: the composition is dynamic and tense.

In addition, are still his designs for the altar and choir stalls rooms to mention (about the Hietzinger parish church, St. Peter's Church in Vienna and the Collegiate Church of Klosterneuburg ), which reveal a strong spatial structure trained in the theater concept.
